Most buyers today choose a subscription model — lower upfront costs, predictable OpEx, and full access to every new release and cloud service. Perpetual is still available for shops that prefer permanent ownership. Here’s how the three models compare.
Device Term License
Machine-locked — tied to a specific computer. Available in 3-month or 1-year terms, so your software costs move with your budget cycles rather than requiring a large upfront capital outlay. Full subscription benefits included: every new SOLIDWORKS release, Cloud Services (AI, collaboration, cloud storage), and local VAR support.
Best for: Fixed workstations, shops that prefer predictable OpEx, and businesses that want flexibility to adjust their product mix at each renewal.
Single-User Subscription
Tied to a person, not a machine. The same user can access SOLIDWORKS from any device using their 3DEXPERIENCE® ID — office workstation, home laptop, or anywhere in between. Monthly or annual billing. Full subscription benefits plus Cloud Services included. No machine restrictions, no VPN tunnel required.
Best for: Engineers who work across multiple machines or locations, remote and hybrid teams, consultants, and anyone who doesn’t want to be tied to one workstation.
Perpetual License
A one-time CapEx purchase — you own the software indefinitely. An optional annual Subscription Service keeps you current with new releases, Cloud Services, and live technical support (Silver, Gold, or Platinum tiers). Without an active subscription, you retain access to the version you own but lose upgrades and cloud features.
Best for: Stable engineering teams that prefer permanent ownership and are comfortable with a higher upfront investment in exchange for minimal ongoing costs.
